Zhang Xin Wu 张新武
Zhang Xin Wu is one of the materialists of contemporary painters, who pay their attention primarily to medium and consider it is as important as their idea of art. He concentrates on mineral colors, and has tried every kind mineral color he possibly can get; carefully selects and grinds them, and experimentally mix them with some other media. What he seeks are the specific effects created on canvas. Sometimes it can be as thick and hard as the surface of a rock, at others, it can be thin and watery as if it might drip off the canvas.
Zhang Xin Wu’s media give characters to his paintings that are as unadorned and naïve as the materials he uses, as original as earth, as simple as nature. Motifs are always a few fruits and a few bows. Objects totally extracted from reality take on a life of their own rather than serve as abstract forms. They are pure and simple with a childlike innocence, and instead of bright and sharp colors, his hues are unadulterated, pure and gentle, with a rich texture. Colors are subtle, well balanced and contrasted. His brush may be likened to a Chinese ink brush. Besides the building of textures, Zhang uses much tinting and the dry stroke techniques of ink painting.
There is truth in the adage: “A painter is his painting.” As a Chinese artist, Zhang Xin Wu, in his painting, reveals his way of viewing the world, a Chinese way, with Chinese aesthetic values. Simple is more and less is more. Zhang’s fruits are fruits but not fruits; beyond their surfaces lie more for you to discover.
